I strongly recommend you make a model. A clay model sorts out the big, immediate problems. And we can gauge the size of wood; or run the grain, or tie elements together, so that the final carving has strength.
If nothing else, you get to really look at the Merlin with your eyes, hands and heart.

Edward - I use the sort of clay a ceramic potter might us - check them out for sources.
We have some workshops on clay modelling in the 'Carving Matters' section - look to the directory on the left - and a download with some tool templates, that will tell you a lot more
