'Setting in'

Setting in: truing the outline. Another fundamental skill to get under your belt.

It's useful to think that you are mixing 2 approaches: setting in by 'matching' and setting in by 'slicing'. Not necessarily in a particular order and usually merging the techniques as you go around.

Matching is used when the curve of tool itself (the 'sweep') gives you the exact shape of an edge. The tool will always give a perfect shape, usually better than any drawing and you want to take advantage of this where you can. Another advantage of matching is is that you can repeat the cut for symmetry.

Slicing is mostly kept for more fluid, longer and slower curves. Essentially you are using the cutting edge like an knife, only with the handle at right angles and taking advantage of it jigging nature (ie making the cut which it then follows).

Dennis - Not really. It depends where you live for a start. The best thing is to search the internet for specialist hardwood suppliers. I mean you can literally put 'buy Jelutong' into a search engine and come up with sources. It may be that you have to buy more than you need, perhaps aboard, but it's always a good idea to have a store of good carving timber.

Could you tell me where I can find the Jelutong to buy?
