A real butterfly's wings are pretty flat; they are all about the colour. Our wood is pale and plain; all about the light and shadow.
What we need to do is what's called 'stylization': Have our butterfly conform to woodcarving and use carving techniques or effects to create the salient features rather than try for genuine realism. We'll imply movement and interest through the form and texture of the wings.
