Lowering

We now turn to carving our butterfly in high relief, which means taking the background down a lot more. The technique of lowering, which you could almost call 'ploughing', is the same for removing wood whatever the depth of relief: it's efficient and if done well lays the foundation for subsequent levelling.

The real difference here lies in our not lining in first, as we did in the low relief. Why not? Because it's a waste of time. But what we do need to think of is a 'buffer zone' to project the subject. You can draw this as I do or just be mindful.

If your wood is really hard, do use a mallet.
