It's the nature of the low relief beast that it's flat. There's not much wood to be removed.

But, of course, it's from where you remove it that matters!

Be clear about the outline of the lion; allow a little hard wall around the outline. And think about the 'watershed', effectively the high area from where the body curves away above and below.
