A-Z Bookends 1

I hope you've had a go at carving the really big junction and serif; the bookend letters are still quite big!

This is a great weekend project and the results can make a lovely present. Watch out for the mallet work, swapping hands and how I deal with the tricky horizontals in this first part: carving the straight elements of the A and the Z.

The bookends are very simple: 2 hefty bits of wood. I used prepared blocks of Sycamore and I'll put all my measurements in the download but how about finding some 'live' edged wood, or something with a different character? Also I didn't paint my letters and that's an option.
