Deborah - I doubt it's the tool. The only way to go deeper and shallower in a running cut is to lift or lower the handle, so that's quite likely what you are doing, even if you don't realise it. Grip the blade with the front hand and rest your forearm on the wood. Now grip the handle with the other hand, keep your elbow in. Now see if you can lock the tool at a fixed angle as you move your body behind the tool. Try not to work from the wrists or arms as that will raise or lower the handle whereas you want to keep the same angle, changing it at will. Hope this helps!

Very clear to follow exercises. I am having a lot of difficulty maintaining the depth of the cut even. I am wondering if it is the tool I am using; a Pfeil intermediate v 12/6.
