Live Edge Pooh Bear with bowl

Project Owner: Susan Dinkelacker
Type of Wood: Camphor
Finish: Danish Oil and Oil paints
Dimensions: 540mm tall and has a diameter of around 330mm

Description:

I've never had a piece of wood call to me to be carved so strongly as this one. When I first saw this Camphor log freshly sawn, I immediately saw Pooh Bear holding a bowl within, and couldn't wait to reveal Pooh by means of hand carving the unnecessary wood away with my chisels. I saw his ears and snout in the cut-off branches, and the hollowed centre naturally cleaned up into a bowl. The shape of the outside of the log perfectly represented Pooh's jacket, so much so that I've been able to leave that part of the live edge of the original piece of wood untouched. The oranges are not part of the carving, but just in the pictures to demonstrate the relative size of the bowl. This was a wonderful sculpture to carve because of the fragrant and characterful Camphor wood but also because each chisel stroke seemed to effortlessly reveal a subject so keen to be revealed.
