Make a Depth Gauge

Although the background in a relief carving doesn't have to be perfectly flat, it must appear flat.

Here's an easy-to-make gauge for checking depth across different parts of your relief carving.

Hi Chris. I highly recommend your book "Woodcarving Course & Reference Manual" to anyone studying this course. There is so much good information here, I find it helpful to further solidify my understanding through some quality time with your book. I enjoy your work and find it inspiring. Thank you!

Frank - You would shape the characters as you would any low relief carving. The trick, as ever, is in the tool control and not cutting into the clean background. You can see me carve the picture above, and a low relief, in my "Woodcarving Course & Reference manual" (Fox-Chapel).

How would you carve the characters and still keep the wood flat? Thank you.
