first few reliefs

Project Owner: john clarke
Type of Wood: Lime
Finish: beeswax and matt black paint
Dimensions: A4

Description:

I carved the first 4 reliefs on a single A4 sheet. The ground in between the carvings was not bad but could have been better (I now have a finishing gouge). Applying linseed oil to the ground had the effect of showing every tool mark or fault and took your attention away from the leaves. I painted the ground with matt black and a fitch brush (you have to be flexible!) . I'm pressing on through the canon of relief carvings and find the videos an excellent way of learning. I'm in my 70's and in my 11th year of Parkinsons which is not yet a problem.

This project was done by a carver with less than 12 months experience.
